THE ESTATES - MARCO ISLAND
Different is perhaps the best word to describe the homes and homesites in the area Islanders know at "The Estates." With large lots, most at least 125 x 200 feet, estate homes range in size from 2,000 square feet to in excess of 6,000 square feet. Bounded by Winterberry Drive to the north and South Heathwood Drive to the west, this part of the island features a link to the island's past and some of the highest land in southwest Florida that offers spectacular views of the region's natural beauty.
From the early to mid 1900's, the Caxambas Cannery produced thousands of cans of clams from it site along the shores of Caxambas Pass. Inland from the old cannery site, the land rises to 57 feet above sea level at Indian Hill. The unusually high land, created from the remnants of a prehistoric sand dune, was probably used by the ancient Calusa Indians. With much native vegetation still covering the land, hillside homesites offer a stunning view of the surrounding mangrove wilderness.
